Let's be honest: chasing payments is the worst part of freelancing. You did the work, delivered on time, and now you're stuck waiting. Here's what actually works to get paid faster.

1. Send Invoices Immediately

Don't wait until Friday to batch your invoices. The moment you finish a project or hit a milestone, send that invoice. Every day you delay is another day you wait for money.

If you're working on bigger projects, break them into milestones so you get paid throughout instead of waiting months for one big payment at the end.

2. Set Clear Payment Terms Upfront

This one saves so many headaches. Before you start any work, make sure your contract spells out:

  • When payment is due (Net 15 or Net 30 works for most)
  • How they can pay you
  • What happens if they pay late

Clients respect clear boundaries. When they know the rules from day one, they follow them.

3. Make Paying Easy

If your client has to dig through emails to find your bank details or figure out how to wire money internationally, you're slowing yourself down.

Put a payment link right in the invoice. Accept multiple payment methods. Make it so easy that paying you takes less than 2 minutes.

4. Use Automated Reminders

Nobody likes sending awkward "just checking in on that invoice" emails. Set up automatic reminders instead. A friendly nudge a few days before the due date works better than an uncomfortable conversation after they're late.

5. Ask for Deposits

For new clients especially, a 50% deposit before starting work is completely reasonable. It shows they're serious, protects you if things go sideways, and improves your cash flow from the start.

Most clients won't even question it. And the ones who do? That tells you something.

The bottom line: getting paid faster isn't about being pushy. It's about having good systems in place so you can focus on the work you actually enjoy.
